We the People

This post is inspired by a friend's status message, which so eloquently read "#%$#%".

He was agitated with
closed minded, narrow minded, medieval people

The issue under debate was same sex marriages. Just to make a point, my stand on it is, As far as the people concerned are okay with it, I don't see why the world must have a say it in. Heck, its a private matter, not to be debated upon by the world just cos it generates TRPs and sells your copy. There are ways of doing it (and the press knows how to), as is sooo justified by the first page of every respectable daily. All i see is a half naked super (?) model walking for some fashion designer. This question is to all those editors who approved that copy, Do you think that pic
  1. changes the world?
  2. Gets me some piece of information that enriches me?
  3. Brings awareness to me?
  4. Changes my life in any way?
No, right? Then why is it there?

Also, since we were on the issue, i looked up some articles on the latest debates on the issue of same sex marriages. So a colleague looks in and says, "Ah so you are interested , eh?" Yes, all as humour, but is this the only thought that comes to people's minds?

Why can't they accept things? Accept others' viewpoint? Not all things are about right and wrong, there's something called relativity. You have your point, I have my mine.

This is what has started coming to the fore very prominently now. The issue of zero tolerance. For most, Its either your way or the wrong way. That's it. Is it always so clear-cut? I'm a classic example of this. Since i moved to this place, I've made new friends, and adjusted to the new place basically. But, I'm a vegetarian and I don't drink. So now some fellows have an issue with that.

My view point on it is : I am a veggie but I'm not asking you to turn veggie. Neither am i making a fuss over whether I'm right or you are. I don't object to you having what you want. So why do you have an issue with me! Same goes for drinking. I don't drink but you are free to, right? Did i ever say that don't?

Here lies the problem with most people. They can't accept others when they are different from themselves. Specially when there are no objections and no fuss. I suppose its taken as arrogance when i feel indifferent to the issue. But the point is, let everyone have their way! As far you don't get drunk and bother me, go on and do what you want. Yes sounds rude, but whats so wrong about it then?

This is just a very small example, but extend it to larger issues, and then it becomes painfully obvious. People just miss the bigger picture at times, cos they can't get over what they think. There's a whole lot of things beyond, which you might or might not approve of, but know it anyway :)

Zero tolerance is what is ruining us. Add to that yellow journalism. So what we have is a biased viewpoint, and added sensation to it. Is this press? Forget freedom of press, i think we need some cleansing of press now!

Bottom line : Understand the news are facts. That facts are an unbiased representation. Let people make their own decisions. I'd say respect others' decisions, but at least learn to live with it. And open your eyes! See the bigger picture.

Phew. Feels good to write a real serious post after long.

And open your eyes! See the bigger picture.Sadly, this is no longer true. News channels sadly, present (propogate?) opinions, instead of neutral facts. It is this presumptuous nature of media and people that piques me.

nice post!
I love the ease with which you express yourself.
Simple, relevant examples, and a to-the-point way of expression.
